Strengthen Your Natural Tooth

WHAT IS A CROWN?

A dental crown is a prosthesis intended to reinforce your natural tooth. It allows the patient to keep his original tooth and therefore avoid extraction.

The crown will cover and protect a tooth that has been damaged, broken or died as a result of decay or root canal treatment. When a tooth is missing, the dental crown also plays an important role, complementing the dental implant which replaces the root. The crown is then anchored to the implant as a replacement tooth, restoring its chewing function.

Unlike veneers, which can only be placed on healthy, aligned teeth, crowns have the advantage of being able to be placed on unaligned, damaged teeth.

TYPES OF CROWNS?

Different types of dental crowns are used by dentists.

The prostheses are distinguished from each other by their materials and their manufacturing techniques.

These are the main factors that determine the price of dental crowns.

There are three main families of crowns:

  1. Metal crowns
  2. Metal-ceramic crowns
  3. Ceramic-ceramic crowns

Much progress has been made in recent years, particularly in terms of ceramic crowns. The most recent prostheses ensure at the same time great resistance, a long-life expectancy, and an ever more natural aesthetic result.

THE METAL CROWN

Metal crowns are generally made from a chromium-nickel alloy. Other metal alloys may also be used. These crowns represent the least aesthetic solution for restoring a tooth, because their metallic appearance does not blend in with the rest of the dentition.

These metal crowns are therefore reserved for the least visible teeth, most often those located at the back of the mouth such as molars.

METAL-CERAMIC CROWN

This type of prosthesis combines the strength of metal with the aesthetic qualities of ceramic. The porcelain-fused-to-metal crown is made up of a metal framework and a porcelain prosthesis, the shade and appearance of which is similar to that of other natural teeth. It is very strong, long-lasting and preserves the opposing teeth.

Its cost is also more attractive.

However, these crowns have a major disadvantage regarding the wear of the gums. Moreover, it reveals the internal metal of the crown over time in the form of a thin grey border which can be seen at the base of the tooth.

THE CERAMIC CROWN ON ZIRCONIA

Zirconia crowns, are also known as ceramic-on-zirconia crowns , ceramic-on-zirconia crowns, zirconium crowns, zirconium oxide crowns, etc. They are unique in that they have no metal framework. The zirconia crown is made up of a zirconium oxide base called the "crown core", a solid, resistant, white material. It is then covered with ceramic layers similar in appearance to natural tooth enamel, for a perfect finish as close as possible to that of a real tooth.

Due to its characteristics, the zirconia crown today makes it possible to achieve the highest level of aesthetics in dentistry.

THE E-MAX CERAMIC CROWN

This is a top-of-the-range dental crown, whose material and the manufacturing process were developed by a company specialised in dental ceramics and is based in Liechtenstein: Invola Vivadent.

This prosthesis is made entirely of ceramic. More precisely, E-max ceramic is a lithium glass-ceramic. The main advantage of E-max crowns is to offer a very aesthetic result since the absence of metal allows to obtain a result very close to a natural tooth. The manufacturing process of an E-max crown makes it possible to present the same aesthetic properties as a real tooth. It lets light through, just like a natural tooth. This property of course makes a huge difference when the patient smiles since it will be impossible to recognise the prosthesis.

The E-max ceramic crown, therefore, offers a perfect aesthetic result, both in terms of shade and its fine and translucent appearance. However, E-max crowns still have their limitations and cannot be used in all circumstances. They will be difficult to fit among extremely stained teeth. Indeed, as E-max crowns allow light to pass through, it may be easy to recognise them in the middle of greyish teeth. In this case, it is therefore preferable to use Zirconia crowns.

E-max crowns are also not recommended for metal posts, and cannot be used for long bridges involving several teeth.

THE COMPOSITE CROWN

This type of prosthesis combines the resistance of metal and the aesthetic qualities of ceramic. The metal-ceramic crown consists of a metal frame and a porcelain prosthesis whose colour and appearance are similar to other natural teeth. It is very solid, has a long lifespan, and preserves the teeth.
